Corinthians, a church beset with issues of moral purity, was announced in these terms, “For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that I might present you to Christ as a pure virgin” (2 Cor 11:2; cf. also Eph 5:22–33).
